How to change a drive icon on Mac

  1. Make the drive visible

    If you cannot see the drive, open Finder then Settings then General and tick Hard disks and External disks. Any mounted volume is also reachable from the Finder sidebar.

  2. Download the icon

    Choose a drive icon above and download the .icns file.

  3. Open Get Info

    Right-click the drive and choose Get Info, or select it and press Command-I.

  4. Drag onto the thumbnail

    Drop the downloaded file onto the small thumbnail at the top-left of the Info window. For the startup disk, macOS asks for your password before it applies the change.

Can I change the Macintosh HD icon?

Yes, though macOS asks you to authenticate because the startup disk is a protected volume. Enter your password when prompted and the icon applies normally.

Does the icon stay when I unplug an external drive?

Yes. A custom icon is written to the drive itself, so it follows the disk to other Macs. That also means the icon travels with the drive rather than staying with your machine.

Do these work for USB sticks and SD cards?

Any mounted volume can take a custom icon, including USB sticks, SD cards and network volumes. Read-only volumes are the exception, because macOS cannot write the icon file to them.

How do I put the default drive icon back?

Open Get Info, click the thumbnail in the top-left corner, and press Delete. The drive returns to its default macOS icon.
