How to change a folder icon on Mac
Download the icon
Pick a folder icon above and download the .icns file. PNG works too, and is easier if you want to crop or recolour it first.
Open the folder's Info panel
Right-click (or Control-click) the folder in Finder and choose Get Info. Selecting the folder and pressing Command-I does the same thing.
Drag the icon onto the thumbnail
Drag the downloaded file onto the small folder thumbnail in the top-left corner of the Info window, not the large preview below it. The thumbnail highlights when you are on target.
Confirm and close
The folder updates immediately. If macOS asks for your password, enter it: that happens for system folders such as Applications. To undo, select the thumbnail and press Delete.

Are these folder icons free?
Yes. Every one of the 2,500+ folder icons here is free to download and use. They are submitted by the community, and each icon credits its designer on its own page.
What format do I need to change a Mac folder icon?
.icns is the native macOS format and the one we recommend: it carries every resolution macOS needs, so the folder stays sharp from the Finder sidebar up to a 512px Desktop icon. PNG works as well, but use one that is at least 512 by 512.
Why will my folder icon not change?
The usual cause is dropping the file on the large preview in the Info window instead of the small thumbnail in the top-left corner. Only the thumbnail accepts a new icon. For a system folder, macOS will also ask you to authenticate first.
How do I reset a folder back to the default icon?
Open Get Info on the folder, click the thumbnail in the top-left so it is highlighted, and press Delete. The folder reverts to the standard macOS blue folder.
Can I use these folder icons on Windows?
The PNG files work anywhere. Windows uses .ico rather than .icns, so you would need to convert the PNG first, which any free icon converter handles.
